NOT-HOME ALONE Katie Addo took a solo trip to Argentina last Thanksgiving—and found the experience liberating. Photo: Katie Addo (Photo); Maria Amador/The Wall Street Journal (Hand Lettering)LAST YEAR, CHRIS REICH, 34, and his extended family—10 people in total—rented a house in Turks & Caicos over the Thanksgiving weekend. “You have someone who wants to do one thing, another person who definitely doesn’t want to do that thing.”This Christmas, Reich is heading back to the Caribbean—by himself. And in late December, Reich happens to get a large chunk of time off work, one of his only opportunities to take trips abroad. “I think [my parents] want me to stay, but they know that it doesn’t make sense,” he said.

"Of course, we know, this is result of climate change. This is unfortunately what we have to expect as the new normal," Hochul said in an address. Hochul warned of "life-threatening" floods and declared a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. She hailed the response of authorities and said on Saturday that no fatalities were reported despite the heavy rain. The New York governor added she spoke to the White House and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and said they were prepared to support a federal emergency declaration of disaster if necessary.

[1/7] An abandoned vehicle sits in floodwaters during a heavy rain storm in the New York City suburb of Mamaroneck in Westchester County, New York, U.S., September 29, 2023. The extreme rainfall prompted New York Governor Kathy to declare a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. Systems producing intense rainfalls have become more commonplace in many parts of the United States, including the New York City area, in recent years. That storm soaked New York City and caused widespread power outages in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In New York, intermittent rain this week further saturated the ground, setting up conditions conducive to flash flooding.

Sheryll Durrant left her family farm in Jamaica in 1989 and embarked on a career in corporate marketing. Now she runs a thriving urban farm wedged into a triangular plot in the Bronx, between the Grand Concourse and the Metro North railroad tracks. “Just putting your hands in soil is a form of healing,” Ms. Durrant, 63, said. The plot she has managed with volunteers for eight years sits on city land and is among more than 500 community gardens in New York City. About a third of them have sprouted in the Bronx, where the gardens are emerald oases, providing residents a respite from hot, treeless streets clogged with traffic, as well as a bounty of locally grown food.

CNN —A metro train has traveled under Sydney Harbour for the first time ever in what’s being described as “a historic first step” for the Australian city. It came over 91 years after the first steam train crossed over the Sydney Harbour Bridge back in January 1932. Courtesy NSW GovernmentThe $20.5 billion AUD (around $13.7 billion) Metro City and Southwest Line, an extension of Sydney’s Metro Northwest line, will eventually extend all the way to the suburb of Sydenham in the inner west of the city. Meanwhile, plans are also in place for a $27 billion AUD (around $18 billion) Metro West line underneath Hunter Street in the Sydney central business district. The city will have a network of four lines, 46 stations and 113 kilometers of new metro rail by 2030.
But NJ Transit is adamant they won’t negotiate at all,” said Jim Brown, president of the New Jersey Transit portion of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen. “NJ Transit is currently engaged in active and ongoing mediation. Those rules unique to commuter railroads can mean it can take three times as long for a strike to be allowed. A freight rail strike would have kept about 30% of the nation’s freight from moving and been a crippling blow to the nation’s economy and supply chain. Phil Murphy’s press office declined to respond on the state of negotiations at NJ Transit when asked for a comment by CNN late last year, referring all questions to NJ Transit.
